Mount View alumnus and wife provide new $5,000 challenge

Future MSAD 3 (Future) officials have announced a new $5,000 matching gift for First Things First, the $124,000 fund drive supporting the ground work for future athletic enhancements at the new K-12 Mount View School in Thorndike.

The contribution from an anonymous couple, will match, dollar-for-dollar, all contributions between $1 and $4,999, up to $5,000 to the campaign to fund water and electrical conduit for Mount View's new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building. Contributions to both First Things First and The Heritage Fund will be matched, since both funds support the campaign for Mount View athletic enhancements.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for donors who have not yet supported the First Things First campaign to have their contribution doubled," said Alicia J. Nichols, Future MSAD 3 Campaign Director. Thousands of Mount View alumni and district residents received a letter last fall asking for their support of First Things First.

"We are tremendously grateful to these generous donors, a Mount View graduate from the class of 1989 and his wife, for their support of our work on behalf of SAD 3 youth," Nichols said.

"We always say - 'no gift is too small.' We can't emphasize enough that every dollar contributed brings us one step closer to the goal of raising $124,000 - and this new match will help to raise an additional $5,000, which is a great boost," added Nichols.

First Things First is the initial phase of a capital campaign for Mount View athletics. Future must raise $56,000 as soon as possible to complete the funding for the infrastructure that was put in place at Mount View's athletic complex this past summer and fall. The underground infrastructure needed to be in first - before any other athletic enhancements can be added. To date more than $68,000 has been raised in contributions and pledges from 290 donors.

Funds raised through First Things First support areas not covered by the state or the district and provides water and electrical conduit to new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building.

While a new, permanent outdoor concessions building to include athletic storage areas and public rest rooms will be funded later during a major capital campaign, Future is now raising funds for the building's utilities that have been put in place and capped - water, power and sewer.

Future MSAD 3 is a non-profit organization run by a board of 19 community volunteers. Their mission is to raise funds to enhance particular areas in the new Mount View School complex not covered by state funding.

Monroe Lions Club supports Future.

Future MSAD 3 has received a $1,000 contribution from the Monroe Lions Club for First Things First, the fund drive to support the infrastructure for future athletic enhancements at the new K-12 Mount View School in Thorndike.

Officers of the Monroe Lions Club, from left Dave Doak, treasurer and on the right Mike Moody, president, recently presented a $1,000 check to Future MSAD 3 board member Judy Nealley of Monroe to support the First Things First campaign for Mount View. Both men are Mount View graduates - Doak is a member of the Class of 1967 and Moody graduated with the Class of 1978.

With more than 1.3 million members, Lions Club International is the world's largest service club organization. Future board chairwoman Vicki Kupferman of Knox acknowledged the contributions of the Monroe Lions Club throughout the area.

~So many of our neighbors are dedicated individuals committed to the concept of serving youth in our communities. On behalf of the Future board, we're grateful for the support of the Monroe Lions Club for First Things First," said Kupferman.

According to Monroe Lions Club treasurer Dave Doak, supporting First Things First was a good match for their service organization. ~We are interested in supporting youth athletics," Doak said. The Lions also sponsor two B.U.M. League basketball teams.

Lions Club President Mike Moody cited Future's campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center as an example of what can be accomplished for area youth when people work together. ~The new performing arts center at Mount View was such a great idea. Anything to actively involve kids in our district is something we like supporting," said Moody.

The service club is active in the community collecting useable eyeglasses for the Lions Eyeglass Recycling program and raising funds for youth athletics. Each year the Monroe Lions Club sponsors the Memorial Day Fair and Parade, featuring a chicken barbeque, craft tent, children's games, and horseshoes. Additional annual events include a Community Breakfast in March and the Hunter's Breakfast each November.

The Monroe Lions Club has 15 members who meet from September to May, the first Tuesday of the month at the Monroe Community Church on West Main Street, and as Moody pointed out, ~We're always looking for new members, both women and men, to join us."

Thanks to the generosity of Mount View alumnus Rob Nielsen '82 of Washington State, the Lions' contribution will be doubled. Future recently announced that Nielsen has offered a $5,000 matching gift for First Things First. The next $4,000 in contributions will be matched, according to Kupferman.

Funds raised through First Things First support areas not covered by the state or the district by providing water and electrical conduit to new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building.

While a new, permanent outdoor concessions building to include athletic storage areas and public rest rooms will be funded later during a major capital campaign, Future is now raising funds for the building's utilities that have been put in place and capped - water, power and sewer.

Specific utilities funded by First Things First include:

Water and electrical conduit to the high school athletic fields, including baseball, field hockey, and two soccer fields, the new track, and multi-purpose field inside the new track.

Electrical conduit for lights at the multi-purpose field, at the track for a FinishLynx electronic timing system, and for a new scoreboard for football, soccer, and track.

Mount View alumnus offers $5,000 matching gift

Future MSAD 3 officials have announced a new $5,000 matching gift from a Mount View alumnus for First Things First, the $124,000 fund drive supporting the ground work for future athletic enhancements at the new K-12 Mount View School in Thorndike.

Rob Nielsen of Camas, WA is providing the $5,000 matching gift. Nielsen is a 1982 graduate of Mount View High School, and is the son of Glen Bridges of Freedom and Robert A. Nielsen, Jr. of Portland. Nielsen's niece and nephew attend Mount View, and his sister is the school nurse.

~I am proud to support Future's work on behalf of youth in SAD 3," Nielsen said of his matching gift to First Things First.

~For years Mount View has had to 'make-do' with aging athletic facilities. The track program hasn't hosted a home meet in two decades. Now, thanks to Future's vision and dogged efforts, we can help to give students in SAD 3 athletic and recreational facilities they truly deserve. My contribution is a challenge to my classmates from 1982 as well all alumni, Mount View parents and grandparents to give what they can to help Future reach this goal," added Nielsen.

Nielsen will match, dollar-for-dollar, all contributions between $1 and $4,999, up to $5,000 to the campaign to fund water and electrical conduit for Mount View's new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building. Contributions to both First Things First and The Heritage Fund will be matched, since both funds support the campaign for Mount View athletic enhancements.

This new matching gift provides tremendous momentum for the project, according to Campaign Director Alicia J. Nichols. ~Rob is a dedicated and generous Mount View alumnus and we are enormously grateful for his dollar-for-dollar match to help us raise an additional $5,000, for First Things First," Nichols said.

~Rob's support is a challenge to other Mount View alumni, to parents, and grandparents of current students to give what they can to meet this goal as soon as possible. No gift is too small. Every dollar, $5, $10, $20 or more adds up," Nichols added.

UniTel, Inc. and Unity Foundation announce challenge grant for First Things First

Future MSAD 3 has announced a new $5,000 challenge grant for First Things First, the fund drive supporting the ground work for future athletic enhancements at the new K-12 Mount View School in Thorndike.

UniTel Inc. and the Unity Foundation are providing the challenge, which will match, dollar-for-dollar, all contributions between $1 and $4,999, up to $5,000 to the campaign to fund water and electrical conduit for Mount View's new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building. Contributions to both First Things First and The Heritage Fund will be matched, since both funds support the campaign for Mount View athletic enhancements.

In a joint statement announcing the grant, Laurie Osgood, UniTel President and Chief Executive Officer and Larry Sterrs, Unity Foundation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said they were happy to once again partner with Future MSAD 3 on this initial phase of the new capital campaign for Mount View.

~UniTel and the Unity Foundation are pleased to offer this challenge grant to assist Future in reaching their current goals for enhancements to Mount View's athletic complex," said Sterrs.

First Things First is the initial phase of a capital campaign for Mount View athletics. Future must raise $67,000 as soon as possible to complete the funding for the infrastructure that was put in place at Mount View's athletic complex this past summer and fall. The underground infrastructure needed to be in first - before any other athletic enhancements can be added. To date nearly $57,000 has been raised in contributions and pledges. Future will continue the First Things First campaign until the goal is met.

The matching grant is a very welcome boost to the project, according to Campaign Director Alicia J. Nichols. ~We are thrilled to add UniTel and the Unity Foundation to our First Things First team of funders," Nichols said.

~The matching grant from UniTel and the Unity Foundation for this new campaign will generate a total of $10,000. Future is grateful for their support - and we encourage everyone who can, to give what they can to meet this goal as soon as possible. No gift is too small. Every dollar, $5, $10, $20 or more adds up," Nichols added.

More than 240 contributors have supported the campaign since its launch on June 1, 2009. According to Nichols, it will likely take double that number of contributors to raise the remaining $67,000.

Future announces new $4,000 match for First Things First

Contributions to The Heritage Fund and First Things First to be doubled

Future MSAD 3 has announced a new $4,000 matching gift for the fund drive supporting the ground work for future athletic enhancements at the new K-12 Mount View School in Thorndike.

The gift, from an anonymous donor will match dollar-for-dollar, all contributions up to $4,000 for the campaign to fund water and electrical conduit for Mount View's new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building.

Contributions to both First Things First and The Heritage Fund will be matched, since both funds support the campaign for Mount View athletic enhancements.

According to Future Campaign Director, Alicia J. Nichols, ~The donor did not graduate from Mount View, nor do they have children at the school, but they understand how important athletics are for youth development and want to do something for future generations."

~The Future board is tremendously grateful for this donor's generosity," said Nichols.

~When no one else would fund the basic infrastructure for the athletic complex, Future took a leap of faith and said, 'We'll do it, we'll find a way.' We're building a dedicated team of funders for this project, and this $4,000 match will encourage others - Mount View alumni, parents, grandparents, coaches, faculty and staff to give what they can, with the knowledge their support will be doubled" added Nichols.

First Things First is the initial phase of a capital campaign for Mount View athletics. Future MSAD 3 (Future) must raise $80,000 as soon as possible to support the infrastructure needed to be in place first - before any other athletic enhancements are added. To date $44,611 has been raised in contributions and pledges. Future will continue the First Things First campaign until the goal is met.

Funds raised through First Things First support areas not covered by the state or the district and provides water and electrical conduit to new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building.

While a new, permanent outdoor concessions building to include athletic storage areas and public rest rooms will be funded later during a major capital campaign, Future is now raising funds for the building's utilities that have already been put in place and capped - water, power and sewer.

Specific utilities funded by First Things First include:

Mount View secretary honored with named seat.

Former MSAD #3 Superintendent Rod McElroy of Unity points to the seat in The Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View to be named for Lucille Curtis, who has served as Mount View High School secretary since 1968. A group of donors quietly contributed $2,500 as a surprise to honor Curtis, who was hired by McElroy 41 years ago. Photo courtesy of Alicia J. Nichols / Future MSAD 3.

Quietly and without fanfare, more than 40 donors have collectively contributed $2,500 to Future MSAD 3 to name a seat for Lucille Curtis of Jackson. Lucy has worked for the past 41 years as the Mount View High School secretary, serving under five principals over the decades. Nearly 4,000 Mount View alumni from the Classes of 1969 through 2009 have known Lucy as the school secretary whose office was ~in a little box with a hole in the wall," as Curtis describes her former work arrangement at the old Mount View.

Lucy Curtis began working at Mount View High School on Sep. 23, 1968.

Now working in the new Mount View High School, open since Sept. 1st, Curtis calls her work space wonderful.

~It's open, bigger, new and beautiful," says Curtis, in comparison to the high school office at the old Mount View.

Looking out from her office into the main lobby, she has a view of the main entrance to The Clifford Performing Arts Center, where her named seat will be in row B, seat 2.

Cathy Cunningham of Freedom worked with Curtis for 18 years as the Guidance Secretary at Mount View High School from 1978 to 1996, and now serves on the MSAD #3 school board.

~Lucy's voice has been for decades now, the first thing generations of high school students hear in the morning and last thing in the afternoon," Cunningham said.

~She is often the person the kids call first after graduation, their confidant, and their best friend. I cannot think of a more deserving honor for a more deserving person than to have a seat named for Lucy Curtis in The Clifford Performing Arts Center," added Cunningham.

The seat campaign offers donors the opportunity to have a dedication plate on a seat or seats. Named seats start at $250 and seat forms can be found online at www.futuremsad3.org.

Contributors may name seats for their family, a favorite teacher, coach, business, or Mount View graduating class. There are 100 seats still available for naming in The Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View.

Contributions will be used by FUTURE MSAD 3 to establish a fund for The Clifford Performing Arts Center. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Gift levels for named seats are offered at $2,500 (rows 1 and 2); $1,000 (rows 3 and 4); $750 (rows 5 and 6); $500 (rows 7 and 8); $250 (rows 9, 10 and 11).

David A. Thompson, General Manager of Thompson's Oil in Waldo has announced the Thompson's Oil Challenge for First Things First.

Thompson's Oil and their employees will match, dollar-for-dollar, all contributions between $1 and $4,999, up to $5,000 to the campaign to fund water and electrical conduit for Mount View's new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building. Contributions to both First Things First and The Heritage Fund will be matched, since both funds support the campaign for Mount View athletic enhancements.

~Thompson's Oil is celebrating its 20th year in 2009 and we have a strong commitment to the communities we serve," said Thompson, who is a Class of 1980 Mount View graduate.

~Our company and our employees were pleased to support the efforts of FUTURE MSAD 3 and their volunteers who are working to enhance the athletic and recreational facilities at the new Mount View," added Thompson.

First Things First is the initial phase of a capital campaign for Mount View athletics. Future MSAD 3 (Future) must raise a total of $124,000 as soon as possible to support the infrastructure needed to be in place first - before any other athletic enhancements are added. To date $31,100 has been raised. Future will continue the First Things First campaign until the goal is met.

~This is a terrific opportunity for donors to have their contributions matched, and we appreciate the support of Thompson's Oil Company," said Future MSAD 3 Chairwoman Vicki Kupferman.

~Thousands of Mount View alumni and district residents recently received a letter asking for their support of First Things First. We always say - 'no gift is too small.' We can't emphasize enough that every dollar contributed brings us one step closer to the goal of raising $124,000 - and the Thompson Oil Challenge will help to raise an additional $5,000, which is a great boost," added Kupferman.

Water and electrical conduit, and a sewer line to the planned concessions building site.

Future MSAD 3 is a non-profit organization run by a board of 17 community volunteers. Their mission is to raise funds to enhance particular areas in the new Mount View School complex not covered by state funding.

Future Dedicates Clifford Performing Arts Center

Hundreds of donors attend celebration

On Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, Future MSAD 3 celebrated the dedication of the Bert G. and Coral B. Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View with student performances and recognition of distinguished guests for their leadership in making the venue a reality. Approximately 275 donors attended the dedication and reception.

The ceremony opened with the Mount View Chamber Singers and David Stevenson, Conductor, performing a traditional hymn titled Cool of the Day, arranged by John Ratledge. This was the first opportunity for Mount View's Chamber Singers, Drama Club and Band to perform on the stage of The Clifford Performing Arts Center for an audience.

Drama club members Maggie Clark and Colby Hinson performed a scene from William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. The Mount View Band, under the direction of Michael Flagg, Instrumental Music Director, performed Jeepers Creepers composed by Johnny Mercer and arranged by Victor Lopez for the finale.

Mount View alumnus Alan Grover served as the dedication's Master of Ceremonies and welcomed the more than 300 donors with an invitation to celebrate their collective efforts.

~Today we celebrate generosity, volunteerism, leadership, and the power of believing in a dream. We also celebrate the generations of young performers who will grace this stage thanks to your contributions to this historic campaign," said Grover.

Future MSAD 3 board chairwoman Vicki Kupferman acknowledged distinguished guests including Congressman Mike Michaud, Raymond Roberts, III, Area Director for USDA Rural Development, and Mount View alumnus Jamie Brennan, staff assistant to Senator Susan Collins.

In her opening remarks, Kupferman recognized all past and current Future board members.

~Today, we dedicate the Bert G. and Coral B. Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View. More than six years ago, it all started with a dream. We dreamed of a place where the talents of our students could take center stage. An auditorium where family and friends could sit in comfort to experience the glorious sights and sounds of music, drama, dance and so much more. The dream was nurtured by the unwavering spirit of a cadre of volunteers who coordinated countless events."

Future began raising funds for the project in 2004, holding penny drives at each district elementary school, golf tournaments, bottle drives, public suppers, road races and dances.

~These community events," Kupferman noted, ~all helped to set the stage in launching the capital campaign. We celebrate this day and this venue with all who believed in the dream and supported our early efforts."

Kupferman also recognized the leadership of the two individuals who served as Honorary Campaign Co-Chairpersons, Laurie Osgood of Belfast and Rod McElroy of Unity.

Osgood is a graduate of Mount View and the University of Maine. She serves as president and chief executive officer of UniTek, Incorporated, and is also the president and Chief Executive Officer of UniTel and UniCap.

~Laurie's name recognition among alumni and the community along with her tremendous business experience made her a priceless asset to our efforts. We're grateful for Laurie's role in securing a major gift for the campaign from UniTel," said Kupferman.

Rod McElroy's distinguished career in education includes 23 years of service to MSAD #3 - as guidance counselor, principal, and superintendent.

~Rod has been described as 'the historian of the district,' and was instrumental in raising funds for the campaign from faculty and staff members who worked at Mount View when school opened in 1964," noted Kupferman.

Thanks to Rod's efforts, Kupferman said, the front row center seat was named for Mount View's first principal - Charles L. Cosgrove, Jr.

Kupferman acknowledged that Cosgrove's widow, Aline Cosgrove, had traveled from Lewiston with her sons Tom Cosgrove and Chuck Cosgrove to attend the dedication.

Larry Sterrs, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Unity Foundation was recognized for the foundation's leadership and efforts in supporting the $575,000 campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center, launched on May 31, 2006 from the stage at the old Mount View High School. A plaque honoring Bert and Coral Clifford, founders of the Unity Foundation, was recently installed at the performing arts center's main entrance.

The major naming gift for the facility was a $250,000 challenge grant from the Unity Foundation, which matched contributions dollar-for-dollar. While the Foundation gave Future five years to raise the $250,000, funds were raised in 497 days to complete the campaign in October 2007. Alicia J. Nichols of Newport served as Future's Campaign Director.

Osgood, McElroy, Sterrs, and Future's former chairman Steve Bennett were each presented with a framed photograph of The Clifford Performing Arts Center.

Joe Mattos, MSAD #3 Superintendent of Schools, expressed the district's gratitude for transforming what would have been a basic auditorium into a true performing arts center.

A donor reception followed the dedication. After the dedication, guests were invited to tour the Performing Arts Center, including coming up on the stage to look out onto the auditorium.

Special Features of The Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View include:
Auditorium seating for 300; of those seats, 176 seats have been named and 124 seats are available to be named.

Ramped seating that allows all audience members a perfect view of the entire stage.

Enhanced sound and lighting systems funded by the capital campaign.

A catwalk is accessible from the second floor mezzanine. The catwalk provides access to the rigging above the auditorium where stage lights hang.

The mezzanine provides access to the control room and a storage area above the stage.

FUTURE MSAD 3 will establish a fund to provide support for the maintenance of The Clifford Performing Arts Center.

Future MSAD 3 was chartered in January 2004 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable corporation. Formed as a community-based, all-volunteer group, Future's mission is to work collaboratively with MSAD #3 to enhance educational opportunities for children and the broader community. Future has raised $638,000 for The Clifford Performing Arts Center campaign, and continues to accept contributions for named seats ranging from $250 to $2,500. Future is governed by a board of 16 volunteers

The Unity Foundation was established as a public grantmaking foundation in 2000 by the late Bert G. Clifford and his wife, Coral, of Unity, Maine. The Cliffords wanted to build the capacity of well-managed nonprofit organizations across Maine and the country to fulfill their missions to arts, culture, recreation, community, economic development, education, the environment, and youth.

The dream of their founders of supporting high-performance, mission-driven non profits that demonstrate ~best practices" in administration and management remains their guiding principle.

The Unity Foundation is headquartered on Main Street in Unity. As one of Maine's foremost grantmakers, the Unity Foundation awards partnership funding to nonprofits working in collaboration with its two publicly-supported organizations, Good Will-Hinckley and Unity College. In the years since its founding, Unity Foundation has awarded nearly $4,000,000 in grant funding.

Foundation staff work with leaders of Maine's nonprofit organizations to enhance sustainability and build capacity through its C.Q.™ tool, hands-on strategic planning and other assistance. We partner with Maine Community Foundation and UniTel, Inc. to support local nonprofits serving the needs of the community through the Jumpstart Our Youth (JOY) project, now in its second year. JOY teaches 3,200 Maine middle and high school students about the value of hands-on community commitment and the principles of ~smart" philanthropy. Jobs for Maine's Graduates, delivers this groundbreaking program which currently supports 66 groups of middle and high school students. Much like foundations or corporations, students design and offer requests for proposals (RFP), review applications from local youth-serving nonprofits, participate in site visits, interview nonprofit applicants, review budgets and then award grants. Simultaneously, the students develop service learning projects with their grant recipients in order to provide hands-on kid power to the community and strengthen their understanding of the value of local organizations.

The Board and Staff at Unity Foundation was pleased to work with FUTURE MSAD 3 early in the fundraising campaign to provide the impetus for raising over $638,000 to provide financial support for this magnificent facility, which will now bear the name The Bert G. & Coral B. Clifford Performing Arts Center.

Alan Grover is a 1977 graduate of Mount View High School.  He was active in high school sports (baseball, soccer), student government (class president), and loved the Mount View stage (Variety Show, drama club).  After high school graduation, Alan attended Colby College and the University of Maine, with several years of skiing in the Rockies thrown into the mix. He earned a Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism, and served the citizens of eastern and central Maine for 20 years as a television journalist.  In 2008, Alan became the Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager for Cianbro, Maine's largest construction firm.  He coordinates the company's communications, internal and external, throughout Cianbro's operational territory from Maine to Washington, D.C.

First Things First closing in on $10,000

First Things First, the campaign to fund the infrastructure for future athletic enhancements at the new K-12 Mount View School in Thorndike is closing in on the $10,000 mark.

Nonprofit FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE) is working to raise $124,000 by September 30, 2009. The new campaign focuses on raising private funds for Mount View's athletic and recreational facilities. Contributions to First Things First support the infrastructure necessary to be in place first - before any other athletic enhancements are added.

~We have received $9,074 as of August 11th," reported FUTURE Campaign Director Alicia J. Nichols.

~We're in a full sprint for the next six weeks to reach the First Things First finish line. The Clifford Performing Arts Center in the new school is the best example of what can be accomplished when people rally behind a common goal," Nichols explained.

FUTURE conducted the capital campaign for the new performing arts venue in Mount View, raising more than $634,000, and is now focusing on funding athletic and recreational opportunities.

Last month FUTURE launched The Heritage Fund, a new giving initiative to recognize and honor the alumni, faculty, staff and administrators of the six high schools that served western Waldo County communities prior to the 1964 construction of Mount View High School. Contributions to The Heritage Fund will support the campaign for new and existing athletic and recreational facilities. Donors to The Heritage Fund will be recognized on a permanent plaque at the new Mount View High School Track Complex.

Anyone driving by the old Mount View complex can see the site work currently underway. The state-funded construction project includes a new eight-lane all-weather track, a multi-purpose field and a new high school soccer field. All additional enhancements must be privately funded.

Funds raised by FUTURE support areas not covered by the state or the district - water and electrical conduit to the high school athletic fields, including baseball, field hockey, and two soccer fields, the new track, and multi-purpose field inside the new track.

Additional infrastructure includes electrical conduit for lights at the multi-purpose field, at the track for a FinishLynx electronic timing system, and for a new scoreboard for football, soccer, and track; and water and electrical conduit, and a sewer line to a future concessions building site.

FUTURE MSAD 3 is a non-profit organization governed by a board of volunteers. Their mission is to raise funds to enhance particular areas at the new Mount View School not covered by state funding. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

FUTURE MSAD 3 launches new giving initiative

The Heritage Fund honors commitment to education in Waldo County

A new giving initiative has been launched by FUTURE MSAD 3 to recognize and honor the alumni, faculty, staff and administrators of the six high schools that served western Waldo County communities prior to the 1964 construction of Mount View High School in Thorndike. Contributions to The Heritage Fund will support FUTURE's next campaign for Mount View's new and existing athletic and recreational facilities.

~We developed The Heritage Fund to honor the traditions and deep commitment to education that existed in western Waldo County prior to the creation of SAD 3," explained Alicia J. Nichols, FUTURE MSAD 3 Campaign Director.

~Many people remember that before MSAD 3 - there were schools in various towns providing students with an excellent education," said Nichols.

For generations students in the towns that now comprise SAD 3 attended one of the following schools: Freedom Academy, Monroe High School, Morse Memorial High School in Brooks, Unity High School, Unity - Freedom High School, and Walker High School in Liberty.

Numerous graduates from these schools reside in SAD 3, and thousands of Mount View alumni have family members who worked at or attended one of the six high schools.

Several alumni groups continue to hold summer reunions, including Unity High School, Freedom Academy, Unity-Freedom Academy and Morse Memorial High School - all have planned alumni gatherings in July or August.

~The Heritage Fund will provide permanent recognition to honor the history and accomplishments of the generations who attended and worked in these high schools prior to the opening of Mount View in 1964," Nichols said.

Contributors to The Heritage Fund will be recognized on a permanent plaque at the new Mount View High School Track Complex. The plaque placement was approved by the SAD 3 school board in September 2008.

Donors will be listed in alphabetical order under the name of one of the six high schools. Gifts in any amount may be made ~in memory of" or ~in honor of." Donors may recognize family members, friends, and former teachers, staff and administrators through their contributions to The Heritage Fund.

~We have great hopes that families will enthusiastically respond to The Heritage Fund, and will want to honor generations of family members - parents, grandparents, great-grandparents through this giving initiative," added Nichols.

FUTURE is the nonprofit organization that conducted the campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center in the new K - 12 Mount View School. During FUTURE's first capital campaign 400 donors contributed more than $634,000. The new campaign focuses on the school's athletic and recreational facilities.

In June the nonprofit's board of directors donned their ~rally caps" to announce their new project, First Things First, a fund drive to help lay the ground work for future athletic enhancements at the new Mount View School in Thorndike. First Things First is a 'pre-campaign' to raise $124,000 by September 30, 2009.

Funds raised through First Things First will support brining water and electrical conduit to new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building.

While the new, permanent outdoor concessions building to include athletic storage areas and public rest rooms will be funded by a yet-to-be announced major capital campaign, the group is now raising funds to have the building's utilities - water, power and sewer, put in place and capped while the site is still under construction this summer.

FUTURE MSAD 3 announces Pay to Not Play Golf Tournament

For the past five years nonprofit FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE) hosted a golf tournament fundraiser at Country View Golf Club in Brooks. In 2009, FUTURE has announced the Pay to Not Play Golf Tournament, a ~non-event" to raise funds for the organization supporting enhancements to the new Mount View School in Thorndike set to open Sept. 1st.

FUTURE is the nonprofit organization that conducted the campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center in the new K - 12 school. FUTURE's first capital campaign supported the performing arts at Mount View with 400 donors contributing more than $630,000. The new campaign focuses on the school's athletic and recreational facilities.

~FUTURE is planning a Sept. 20th dedication and donor celebration for The Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View," explained the nonprofit's treasurer and golf tournament director, Barrie Fernald of Troy.

~In addition to hosting a major special event in Sept., the entire FUTURE board is working on First Things First - a fund drive supporting future athletic enhancements at the new school. We realized something had to give, so the annual golf tournament has been postponed until 2010, and we're asking golfers, hole sponsors, and volunteers to support FUTURE's work on behalf of SAD 3 youth by contributing to the Pay to Not Play fundraiser," added Fernald.

~We want all of our golfers and supporters to know the FUTURE MSAD 3 annual Golf Tournament will return to Country View Golf Club in Sept. 2010," Fernald said.

All proceeds from the 2009 Pay to Not Play Golf Tournament benefit FUTURE MSAD 3, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer-led community organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

In June FUTURE announced their new project, First Things First, a fund drive to help lay the ground work for future athletic enhancements at the new Mount View School in Thorndike. First Things First is a 'pre-campaign' to raise $107,575 by September 30, 2009.

Funds raised through First Things First will support brining water and electrical conduit to new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to a planned outdoor concessions building.

While the new, permanent outdoor concessions building to include athletic storage areas and public rest rooms will be funded later during FUTURE's major capital campaign, FUTURE is now raising funds to have the building's utilities - water, power and sewer, put in place and capped while the site is still under construction this summer.

FUTURE MSAD 3 receives grant from '09 In Action

Student group endorses nonprofit initiative to GO GREEN!

The '09 In Action - Partners In Philanthropy committee at Mount View High School awarded a $2,500 grant to FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE) at a presentation held at the school on June 4th.

This grant will help to fund the development and implementation of a networked data base, combining two disparate lists into one and linking four individuals located in separate locations who all need access to a centralized data base.

The goal of the networked data base project is to become more efficient, more effective, more productive, and ultimately be a more green nonprofit by securing emails to communicate with the majority of our nearly 400 donors from a centralized data base.

This project will also allow FUTURE to reduce costs for printing and postage.

As part of this project, FUTURE will mail postcards to their donor base asking them for email addresses to ~help FUTURE MSAD 3 GO GREEN," which conveniently is also the Mount View school color, and many donors are alumni or live in SAD 3 communities.

In addition, FUTURE has secured permission from Village Soup/The Republican Journal to use free of charge (with photo credits) their Mount View athletic photos, which will be used to create a sports theme for the ~GO GREEN" postcards.

'09 In Action provided a $1,250 grant in 2008 to support seed funding for FUTURE's next capital campaign to support enhancements to Mount View's new and existing athletic and recreational facilities.

'09 In Action is a group of Mount View seniors who have been working with the Maine Community Foundation's Waldo County Committee since 2006 to make grant funds available that will improve conditions in SAD 3 communities for youth.

During the year students worked with Barbara Adams, a Mount View Guidance Counselor, Faith Garrold and Patrick Walsh, volunteer members of the Waldo County Committee.

The Mount View students reviewed all of the grant applications and made final decisions to award grants to two area nonprofits, Camp Forest in Brooks and FUTURE MSAD 3.

~We forget that the littlest things we do make a difference," Garrold said, recognizing the Mount View seniors work with '09 In Action.

Cherie Galyean, Maine Community Foundation Officer for the Midcoast and Downeast regions, attended the presentation and spoke about the importance of youth involvement in philanthropy.

Vicki Kupferman of Knox, chairwoman of FUTURE MSAD 3 accepted the check.

~We are so grateful for the support from current students for the network data base project. We thank '09 In Action for your support, and wish all Mount View graduates every success in the years to come," Kupferman said after receiving the grant.

FUTURE MSAD 3 is a non-profit organization governed by a board of 14 volunteers. Their mission is to raise funds to enhance particular areas in the new Mount View School complex not covered by state funding. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. For more information about FUTURE MSAD 3 or to contribute, call 207-948-6120, email futuremsad3@yahoo.com, or visit www.futuremsad3.org.

Mount View seniors receive very special gifts

Each member of Mount View's Class of 2009 received a very special gift from the Unity Foundation at a presentation during graduation marching practice on June 4th.

Thanks to funding provided by the Unity Foundation to FUTURE MSAD 3, each senior was presented with a Mount View collectible. The collectibles are freestanding wooden blocks featuring a custom original watercolor of the old Mount View by Maine artist Sandy Manship. FUTURE MSAD 3 is the exclusive vendor of Mount View memorabilia manufactured by Fernwood Artworks of Maine.

A custom stamp on the back of each collectible reads: To the Class of 2009 - good luck in all you do! From The Unity Foundation and FUTURE MSAD 3, June 7, 2009

On Sunday, June 7, 2009, the last class at the old Mount View High School will hold their commencement ceremonies. In recognition of this historic graduating class, the Unity Foundation wanted to present a lasting keepsake to each senior.

During the presentation to the seniors, Unity Foundation Chairman and CEO Larry Sterrs said "the Unity Foundation is pleased to partner again with FUTURE MSAD 3 to acknowledge the Mount View High School graduating Class of 2009."

In mid-June, the demolition of the old Mount View School will begin, with the new Mount View School set to open on Sept. 1st.

FUTURE MSAD 3 puts on ~rally caps" for First Things First fund drive

In announcing their next project, FUTURE MSAD 3 board members put on their ~rally caps" to show their enthusiasm and excitement for their new campaign - First Things First, a fund drive to help lay the ground work for future athletic enhancements at the new Mount View School in Thorndike.

FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE) is the nonprofit organization that conducted the campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center in the new K - 12 school set to open Sept. 1st. While FUTURE's first capital campaign supported the performing arts at Mount View with 400 donors contributing more than $630,000, their next campaign will focus on the school's athletic and recreational facilities.

According to FUTURE board Chairwoman Vicki Kupferman of Knox, ~the original FUTURE board in 2004 had set their sights on funding the performing arts campaign and then athletics, with the intent of funding specific enhancements that the state and the district could not fund."

The state is funding an eight-lane rubberized track, a multi-purpose field inside the track, and a new high school soccer field. Two middle school athletic fields (baseball/soccer and softball/field hockey) were also covered by state funds. All other athletic improvements must be privately funded through FUTURE's capital campaign.

~The planning for this next project began some 17 months ago with the formation of the Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee," explained Kupferman, ~and the board is thrilled to now launch First Things First, which will fund the necessary utilities for Mount View's new and existing athletic complex."

~First Things First is a 'pre-campaign' to raise $107,575 by September 30, 2009. Funds will support the infrastructure we need to be in place first - before any other athletic enhancements are added," Kupferman explained, ~like the new outdoor concessions building with athletic storage space and restrooms, which we will fund later."

~As with The Clifford Performing Arts Center campaign," Kupferman noted, ~FUTURE is raising funds to support areas not covered by the state or the district."

The Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee (AEAC) worked over the past year to develop a list of athletic and recreational facility enhancements. FUTURE board member Doug Van Horn of Freedom co-chaired the committee with Kupferman.

The committee met with more than 300 people - the Mount View athletic department, coaches, students, faculty, staff, administrators, Booster Clubs and members of the community to get their input on potential athletic and recreational facility enhancements.

The AEAC also worked with SAD 3 Superintendent Joe Mattos, the school board, and building committee during the lengthy planning process.

Having quality, safe playing fields was identified by the members of the AEAC early on in the process as a top priority.

The AEAC included certain infrastructure elements in the plan to provide utilities like water and power to the existing playing fields - as well as for the new fields.

While a new, permanent outdoor concessions building to include athletic storage areas and public rest rooms will be funded later during FUTURE's major capital campaign, FUTURE is now raising funds to have the building's utilities - water, power and sewer, put in place and capped while the site is still under construction this summer.

Funds raised through First Things First will support brining water and electrical conduit to new and existing athletic fields, and water, power and sewer lines to the planned outdoor concessions building.

The specific utilities to be put in place during the summer include:

In mid-June, the demolition of the old Mount View School will begin, to make way for the construction of the eight-lane all-weather track, multipurpose field for soccer and football, and a new high school soccer field.

The utilities work will take place while the athletic complex is under construction this summer, and will be funded by contributions to First Things First.

~The Sept. 30th deadline for meeting the First Things First goal of $107,575 means we'll have a very busy summer," explained Campaign Director Alicia J. Nichols, ~and I know from personal experience that the FUTURE board is up to this challenge. The 14-member board is unanimous in their support and is working as one team to reach this goal. They have the hearts of champions!" Nichols exclaimed.

Kupferman emphasized the board's teamwork approach for this project.

~Our board is currently reaching out to ask people to put on their 'rally caps' and join us," said Kupferman. ~We're looking for support from people who feel passionately about the value of youth athletics and the need for more recreational opportunities for our kids."

~The FUTURE board knows these are difficult economic times for all of us. That's certainly part of the reason why we're kicking-off this project with a smaller goal - to fund the utilities first, and then move on later to the larger campaign. We also know not everyone can give. We're seeking contributions in any amount - no gift is too small," Kupferman said.

~FUTURE MSAD 3 was formed in 2004 by a dedicated group of volunteers who believe in working hard to support the kids in our district. Today, we put on our rally caps for every girl and boy who will walk through the doors of the new Mount View School. Our efforts are for them," added Kupferman.

FUTURE MSAD 3 is a non-profit organization governed by a board of 14 volunteers who all live in SAD 3. Their mission is to raise funds to enhance particular areas at the new Mount View School not covered by state funding. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Naming gift announced for Performing Arts Center

Nearly three years ago FUTURE MSAD 3 launched the capital campaign for the 300-seat Performing Arts Center at the new Mount View School with the announcement of a $250,000 challenge grant made by Unity Foundation Chairman and CEO, Larry Sterrs.

Sterrs told the crowd gathered in the Mount View cafeteria on that day in May 2006 that the Unity Foundation made the gift in honor of their founders, Bert G. and Coral B. Clifford. Now FUTURE MSAD 3 has announced the venue in the new Mount View School will be named The Clifford Performing Arts Center, in recognition of the lead gift provided by the Unity Foundation.

FUTURE MSAD 3 chairwoman Vicki Kupferman of Knox credits the Unity Foundation's generosity as ~the catalyst for hundreds of contributions to this campaign. We received support from Mount View alumni throughout Maine, New England, and across the country - as well as families, businesses and organizations here in SAD 3," Kupferman said.

The grant provided a dollar match for every dollar raised by nonprofit FUTURE MSAD 3, up to $250,000.

~FUTURE MSAD 3 is tremendously grateful to the Unity Foundation," Kupferman added, ~their staff and board are an exceptional group of individuals. We are honored by their support and delighted to pay tribute to Bert and Coral Clifford with The Clifford Performing Arts Center, which will serve the students and communities of SAD 3 for generations to come."

The first day of classes at the new Mount View School is set for Tuesday, September 1st, according to the MSAD 3 web site.

FUTURE MSAD 3 is a non-profit organization run by community volunteers. Their mission is to raise funds to enhance particular areas in the new Mount View School complex not covered by state funding. The fifth annual FUTURE MSAD 3 Golf Tournament will be held September 13 at Country View Golf Club, Route 7 in Brooks. Tournament registration is at 7:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. and will be held rain or shine.

The FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE) board of directors voted unanimously to dedicate the 2008 Golf Tournament to the memory of Carl Brown, who was always a good friend to FUTURE. Brown, who passed away last May, was the long-time co-owner and manager of Country View Golf Club.

~The FUTURE MSAD 3 board felt very strongly about dedicating this year's tournament to Carl's memory," explained Barrie Fernald. Fernald is the 2008 tournament director and also the treasurer of the FUTURE MSAD 3 board of directors.

~Carl was a great friend to our organization and helped us every step of the way with this event over the past four years. By dedicating this tournament to his memory we want to say 'thank you' to Carl and his family," Fernald added.

In recognition of the challenging economy, organizers of this year's tournament have dropped the team fees by 23 percent and hole sponsorships by 50 percent. Team fees are $50 per person or $200 for a team if team fee is paid in full by Sept. 2nd. Team paying after Sept. 2nd will be $60 per person or $240 per team. Fees include 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and prizes. The winning team will also receive free entry for the 2009 tournament.

~By lowering our fees," Fernald continued ~we hope to encourage even more people to support this important fundraising event - by golfing and playing the contests on the course, sponsoring a hole, donating a prize or a food item."

Hole sponsorships are available for $50. Sponsors will receive their business or family name on a large golf-ball shaped sign at a hole on the Country View course.

Also new this year is a chance to win a car worth more than $30,000.

The Hole-In-One prize is winner's choice of a 2008 Buick Lacrosse or a 2008 Buick Lucerne, sponsored Dutch Chevrolet Buick Pontiac in Belfast. The cars are valued at $30,999.

Additional hole-in-one prizes include TaylorMade Tour Burner Irons and Smoke Rac Wedges; a TaylorMade Burner Driver and Burner Fairway Woods; and a five-day/four-night golf vacation to a fabulous Fairmount Resort.

According to Fernald, many golfers should be happy to know that organizers have eliminated ~string-by-the-foot" for this year's tournament, and Ross McGee is returning for ~Let the Pro hit it for you."

Tournament proceeds will benefit the new campaign for Mount View athletic facilities.

Construction of the new Mount View school provides an opportunity to create quality athletic and recreational facilities that will help to promote a healthy lifestyle and combat youth obesity rates.

While the Pre-K to 12 Mount View school currently under construction in Thorndike will feature a new state-funded eight-lane track, multi-purpose field, and an additional high school soccer field, the state will not fund items such as scoreboards, bleachers, equipment, lights, and dugouts.

Ensuring Mount View students have the facilities they deserve has always been the focus of FUTURE's work.

For more information regarding hole sponsorship and team registration email Barrie Fernald at barrie@uninets.net or call 207-948-2644.

FUTURE MSAD 3 to present athletic enhancement plan to school board

A proposed plan listing possible enhancements to the new Mount View school's indoor and outdoor athletic facilities will be considered by the SAD 3 school board at their Aug. 11th meeting.

While the Pre-K to 12 Mount View school currently under construction in Thorndike will feature a new state-funded eight-lane track, multi-purpose field, and an additional high school soccer field, the state will not fund items such as scoreboards, bleachers, equipment, lights, and dugouts. The nonprofit group FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE) is ready to ~step up to the plate to raise private funds to support the athletic enhancements not funded by the state," according to FUTURE MSAD 3 Campaign Director Alicia Nichols.

~FUTURE began working with Superintendent Joe Mattos in July 2007 - it was actually his third day on the job - to plan this project," Nichols explained. In August 2007 the SAD 3 school board unanimously endorsed FUTURE MSAD 3 as the fundraising entity for the capital campaign to benefit Mount View athletics.

In its first capital campaign FUTURE raised more than $575,000 to fund the 300-seat Mount View Performing Arts Center, located off the main lobby of the new school. The Unity Foundation provided a $250,000 matching grant to the campaign. Laurie Osgood and Rod McElroy are the Honorary Co-Chairs for that campaign.

~Supporting Mount View athletics was a natural next step after funding the Performing Arts Center," Nichols said. ~A number of dedicated volunteers including the FUTURE board and the 24-member Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee have worked tirelessly on this plan," added Nichols.

A joint board workshop was held in September 2007 with the FUTURE and SAD 3 boards, and from that meeting a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was crafted and then approved in February 2008 outlining the roles and responsibilities to guide the project.

Included in the MOU was the formation of an Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee with the charge of seeking public input on project components and securing cost estimates for the enhancements.

FUTURE board members Vicki Kupferman of Knox and Doug Van Horn of Freedom Co-Chair the Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee (AEAC), which is comprised of FUTURE board members, Booster Club members, MVHS athletic department staff, coaches, faculty, and community residents. The AEAC has been working since February to develop a master plan that will be the foundation for FUTURE's next capital campaign to support enhancements for Mount View athletics.

Between March and April the AEAC held 11 meetings with Mount View students, faculty, athletic staff and community members to seek input on athletic enhancements. SAD 3 voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum supporting the enhancements in a June 10th district-wide vote.

AEAC Co-Chair Doug Van Horn will present the plan at the Aug. 11th SAD 3 school board meeting, outlining improvements to new and existing facilities for baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, softball, soccer, and track.

The plan also calls for new equipment for both track and the new fitness center, an outdoor basketball court for the Middle School, improved amenities for spectators including permanent bleachers and scoreboards, lighting the multi-purpose field, and a new outdoor high school concession building.

While no financial goal for the capital campaign has been set, securing the approval of the SAD 3 school board is the next step in the plan.

~The students of this district have always been FUTURE's first priority and we know there's already a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm for this next project," Nichols said.

School board members will review the Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee proposed plan at their August 11th meeting, and will consider it for approval at their September 8th board meeting.  Once approved, FUTURE will continue working with SAD 3 and new school architect Oak Point Associates of Biddeford to develop specific site plans and renderings.

Nichols describes capital campaigns as marathons. ~There's still a great deal of planning work to do. Campaigns of this scope are like an endurance race, and we have a lot of ~miles" and ~hill work" ahead of us, but with nearly 400 donors to the first campaign, we have a solid track record of support," added Nichols.

When Oak Point completes their design work FUTURE should be closer to knowing the capital campaign goal which will include an operating endowment for athletics.

~Mount View athletics have a strong, proud tradition and we're looking forward to working together as ~one team" with Superintendent Joe Mattos, the board, the Athletic Booster Club, the Football Booster Club, coaching staff, parents, alumni, and potential funders," said Nichols, ~all of whom are passionate about Mount View athletics."

FUTURE MSAD 3 gets sneak peak of new Mount View

Five members of the FUTURE MSAD 3 board of directors were treated to a sneak preview of the new Mount View school under construction in Thorndike. The new Mount View is set to open in the fall of 2009. FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, raised more than $575,000 to fund the 300-seat Mount View Performing Arts Center, located off the main lobby of the new school. Laurie Osgood and Rod McElroy are the Honorary Campaign Co-Chairs.

Tom McNealy, clerk of the works for the new school project and SAD 3 Superintendent Joe Mattos provided a guided tour of the 188,000 square-foot construction project on June 27th for FUTURE board members Barrie Fernald, Barbara Higgins, Vicki Kupferman, Marsha Shibles, and Doug Van Horn.
The $40 million school, the largest ever funded by the state of Maine, will serve pre-kindergarten through high school students from the SAD 3 communities of Unity, Troy, Thorndike, Jackson, Waldo, Brooks, Freedom, Knox, Monroe, Montville and Liberty. As McNealy and Mattos explained, the new Mount View will feature state of the art technology and energy efficiency.
A wood chip boiler will produce more than enough heat without using the reserve oil burners. Radiant heat coming from over 10 miles of heat tubing in the concrete slab floors will make for a very comfortable environment, even on January days when it's below zero and the wind's howling.
An air exchange system will provide fresh air in the building every 90 minutes and will be closely monitored and controlled by computer.
FUTURE board members were most eager to see the progress on the Performing Arts Center.

The new performance venue will feature a thrust stage, ramp seating, warm bamboo paneling, a deep-green theatre curtain, upholstered auditorium seats, cat-walk, mezzanine and control booth. All of these enhancements were made possible thanks to the generosity of private contributors, whose gifts were matched by a $250,000 grant from the Unity Foundation, in honor of their founders, Bert G. and Coral B. Clifford. A named seat campaign is ongoing. Proceeds will be used by FUTURE to establish an endowment for the Mount View Performing Arts Center.

FUTURE's next project will fund enhancements to Mount View's new and existing athletic facilities. Vicki Kupferman and Doug Van Horn are Co-Chairs of the Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee, which formed last February to develop the enhancement plan, the first step in designing what will be a major capital campaign.

5/19/08 - SAD 3 elementary schools work together as one team! More than 150,000 pennies donated to support future capital campaign. The final count is in - SAD 3 Elementary Schools raised $1,510. 57 in the fourth annual Penny Drive to benefit nonprofit FUTURE MSAD 3 (FUTURE). Participating schools included Monroe Elementary, Unity Elementary, Mount View Elementary, Walker Elementary in Liberty, Troy Central and Morse Memorial in Brooks.

The total raised represents 151,057 pennies, most of which were counted and rolled by Bob Winship of Unity.

Funds raised through the Penny Drive support FUTURE's upcoming capital campaign to enhance and improve the athletic facilities at the new Mount View School complex currently under construction in Thorndike. The Unity Area Rotary Club, UniTel, and area individuals also contributed to the total raised.

The Penny Drive was coordinated by FUTURE MSAD 3 Event Committee Co-Chairs Bev Winship and Barbara Higgins, both of Unity, with volunteer support from Joanne Levesque, Becky Porter, Colleen Connell, Debbie Muther, Donyse Babin, Paula Miron, and Sherry Vashon.

~We're so very grateful for the support of the district's youngest students in the six elementary schools," said Alicia J. Nichols, FUTURE MSAD 3 Campaign Director, ~as well as the principals, faculty, staff and volunteers who truly all worked together as ~one team" on this fundraising project."

FUTURE recognizes the school with the highest percentage of student participation. In 2008 Troy Central Elementary School takes the honors with $2.62 raised per student.

Students in classrooms at four of the six elementary schools also competed for top fundraising honors. The top four classes include:
Mrs. Bryant, Kindergarten, Mount View Elementary
Mrs. Hamilton, Grades 5 & 6, Unity Elementary
Mrs. Stauffer, Kindergarten, Troy Central Elementary
Mrs. Breau, Grade 5, Morse Memorial Elementary

SAD 3 Elementary School Penny Drive Final Totals
Mount View $449.39
Troy Central $275.45
Morse Memorial(Brooks) $253.23
Unity $243.83
Walker(Liberty) $143.43
Monroe $101.52

Over four years elementary schools have raised $6,276 through the annual SAD 3 Penny Drive.

While FUTURE's first capital campaign supported the Mount View Performing Arts Center, this next campaign will focus on athletic and recreational facilities at the new school.

FUTURE formed an Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee (AEAC) to seek public input on athletic facility enhancements; conduct research; develop a comprehensive master plan with the architects; secure cost estimates; and present a final list of enhancements to the boards of both FUTURE and MSAD 3.

Vicki Kupferman of Knox and Doug Van Horn of Freedom are co-chairs of the Athletic Enhancement Advisory Committee.

The state will fund an eight-lane rubberized track, a high school soccer field, and electric conduit to the fields at the new Mount View. Two athletic fields behind the new middle school are also being constructed. All other athletic improvements must be privately funded through the capital campaign.

5/12/08 - Take a peak, have a seat! FUTURE shares latest rendering of Mount View Performing Arts Center. While the new Mount View School currently under construction in Thorndike is still more than one year away from completion, a ~sneak peak" of the Performing Arts Center funded through a private capital campaign is now available thanks to the wonder of computer technology.

FUTURE MSAD 3, the nonprofit organization that conducted the fundraising effort has received an updated rendering of the 300-seat Mount View Performing Arts Center detailing the facilities interior design and color scheme.

The computer-generated rendering, provided by new school architect Oak Point Associates of Biddeford, shows warm bamboo paneling, a deep-green theatre curtain, upholstered auditorium seats, and a portion of the cat-walk high overlooking the stage.

A $575,000 campaign to support the Mount View Performing Arts Center was launched in 2006 with the announcement of a $250,000 challenge grant from the Unity Foundation in honor of their founders, Bert G. and Coral B. Clifford. Laurie Osgood and Rod McElroy are Honorary Campaign Co-Chairs.

Nearly 400 individuals, foundations, businesses, organizations and SAD 3 elementary school students contributed to the capital campaign.

While the challenge grant was met and the campaign goal exceeded in October 2007, FUTURE announced it will establish an endowment to support the Performing Arts Center with remaining funds after the final expenses for the facility have been covered.

According to FUTURE MSAD 3 Campaign Director Alicia Nichols, a named seat campaign launched in the summer of 2007 will continue until all remaining 155 seats are named, with those contributions helping to create the new endowed fund.

The named seat campaign offers donors the opportunity to have an engraved plate on one or more seats. To date, donors have named 143 of the 298 available seats.

~While we have reached the campaign goal and achieved the Unity Foundation challenge grant," Nichols explained, ~we are continuing the named seat campaign, and those gifts will help to establish an endowed fund that will support the new performing arts center for decades to come."

Seats may be named in memory of a loved one, for a student, child, grandchild, family, business, civic group, favorite teacher, administrator, coach, bus driver, best friend, classmate, Mount View class, team, or club.

Named seats are available at a variety of levels for contributions ranging from $150 to $2,500 and are assigned to the appropriate row as gifts come in. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
